Abstract

Multi-hop data transmission is necessary in many underwater scenarios, where instead of transmitting directly over one long hop from the source node to the destination node, multiple intermediate nodes are added between the source node and the destination node. Due to the long propagation delay and the high packet loss rate of the under water acoustic communication links, achieving high end-to-end throughput in multi-hop underwater acoustic networks is challenging. This paper proposes a practical transport-network layer scheme to achieve high throughput and low latency data transmission in multi-hop underwater networks using BATS codes, which are a class of efficient linear network coding scheme with a matrix generalization of fountain codes as the outer code, and batch-based linear network coding as the inner code.
