Abstract Container-grown Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. were treated with the growth retardant PP333 [(2RS, 3RS)-l-(4-chlorophenyl)- 4,4-dimethyl-2-l,2,4-triazol-l-yl-)pentan-3-ol] by applying the chemical to the soil, whole shoot, mature leaves, or stem. Regardless of application site, PP333 resulted in reduced stem elongation compared to untreated plants. However, more retardation occurred when the chemical was applied to the stem than when applied to the leaves. Results indicated that in foliar applications the chemical taken up by the stem was more important than that contacting the leaves.
