During chest compressions, intrathoracic airway patency greatly affects the delivered ventilation. The expired CO2 signal can reflect CPR effectiveness but is also dependent on airway patency. The maximal EtCO2 recorded between consecutive ventilator breaths best reflects alveolar CO2.
