Amorphous cobalt-doped MoO<sub>x</sub> (CMO) nanospheres with a unique core–shell structure have been successfully fabricated <italic>via</italic> a simple hydrothermal reaction. The CMO exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction.
