In order to realize the efficiency improvements offered by hybrid electric vehicles, an optimized control strategy must be deployed. This paper presents the practical considerations relating to the implementation of a dynamic programming optimization strategy for hybrid electric vehicles, and presents a case study into the dynamic programming of a P2 hybrid as an example. Considerations relating to model development and computational requirements are also discussed.
