Abstract

Abstract The value of open-pollinated seed for estimating the additive genetic variance among families is diminished by a probable bias due to natural inbreeding. Several factors including non-additive genetic effects, relatedness of neighboring trees, and the failure to recognize any inbreeding tend to foster an overestimate of the true additive genetic variance.
