Summary Evidence is presented to show that the universal law of the wall has a wider range of validity than the assumption l = ky, with k a universal constant. If an effective value of k is defined for the wall region its value is shown to vary between wide limits, and k eff can be correlated with other parameters describing the flow in the wall region.
