Abstract

Abattoir wastewater may be defined as water that has\nbeen used in the cleaning up of slaughtered cattle, sheep,\ngoat and pig carcasses, the floor of slaughter hall, personnel\nand slaughter equipment. Abattoir wastewater is characterized\nby presence of high concentration of whole blood\nof the slaughtered food animals and suspended particles of\nsemi-digested and undigested feeds within the stomach and\nintestine of slaughtered and dressed food animals. Since\nslaughtering and dressing of food animals take place in an\nabattoir, it becomes easier to refer to the wastewater from\nthis industrial system as “abattoir wastewater”. This study\ndetermined the physico-chemical and patho-bacteriological\nqualities of abattoir wastewater from Bodija Municipal\nAbattoir in Ibadan city, South Western Nigeria.
