An ESIPT based light activated hydrogen sulfide (H<sub>2</sub>S) donor using a p-hydroxyphenacyl phototrigger has been developed. The unique feature of our H<sub>2</sub>S donor system is that it provides real-time monitoring of H<sub>2</sub>S release by a non-invasive fluorescence colour change approach.
