The effect of human growth hormone prepared according to Li & Papkoff (1956) was examined in metabolic studies in four adults, one of which had been hypophysectomized previously. Ten mg of human GH daily had a prompt effect in all cases, consisting in an anabolic action on protein metabolism, increase in calcuria in all patients and a negative calcium balance in all but one subject, expansion of the extracellular fluid volume, decreased glucose tolerance and increase in ketonuria.
