A facile one step hydrothermal method to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) with a high photoluminescence quantum yield using <italic>Bombyx mori</italic> silk was established, and CDs were applied as luminescent probes for selective detection of Fe<sup>3+</sup> ions.
