Upper GI CMV disease can occur in the absence of immunodeficiency and immunosuppression. It is usually symptomatic, and mucosal ulceration is often evident at endoscopy. It is associated with significant mortality; therefore, early diagnosis and adequate antiviral treatment are essential.
