Abstract

Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared using the Hummers' method. α-Fe 2 O 3 -GO with different amount of GO was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The properties of the samples were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and magnetic measurement by the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) technique at room temperature. GO nanosheets operated as supporting materials for attaching the α-Fe 2 O 3 particles. The average crystallite sizes of the α-Fe 2 O 3 and α-Fe 2 O 3 -GO samples were 34.5 and 48.3 nm, respectively. The VSM results showed ferromagnetic property for GO. By increasing the amount of GO in the α-Fe 2 O 3 -GO nanocomposites, the paramagnetic and then superparamagnetic properties were observed. The samples had good stability after one year.
