Five novel organic push–pull dyes, <bold>DT</bold>, <bold>CD-T</bold>, <bold>TD-T</bold>, <bold>CD-C</bold> and <bold>TD-P</bold>, based on carbazole or triphenylamine as donors, dithieno[3,2-<italic>b</italic>:2′,3′-<italic>d</italic>]pyrrole as a π-spacer and cyanoacetic acid as an acceptor were synthesized, and their structures were optimized for DSSCs.
