Abstract

Abstract The tectonics of the Tuscan nappe area of the northern Apennines (Italy) are studied in two traverses across the Apuanes massif. The results suggest that the nappe was positioned by gravity sliding over upper Triassic evaporite beds. Subsequent to the major movement, probably as late as Miocene or Pliocene, faulting in the area formed horsts and grabens which control the present topography.
