Abstract

In this paper, a multi-objective optimization procedure, based on life cycle assessment is presented to optimize the common wall structures in climate of Tehran, Iran. Energy and water embodied in materials, energy dissipation through the wall, cost of material and global warming emission are taken into account as the objective functions. A common wall made of aerated brick (AB), concrete (C) (As the main wall structure) and an insulation layer of expanded polystyrene (EPS) is considered in the optimization process. Main wall orientations (south, west, east, north and roof) are examined in this paper. The effects of insulation position (inside or outside of the wall) on the optimum structure and insulation thickness are also investigated. The results are compared with previously published results, in which the optimization process was based on only energy consumption and cost of insulation materials. A comparison is also made with the minimum requirements of national regulations for buildings.
