Further analysis revealed widespread failure to observe proper experimental design. Of the 31 studies 84 per cent were prospective, 81 per cent were controlled, 55 per cent were randomized and 13 per cent were double blind. Patients were stratified according to underlying diseases and urologic illness in 16 and 40 per cent, respectively. Complications of prophylaxis were mentioned in 48 per cent of the studies and statistical analysis was done in 28 per cent. The studies demonstrated wide variation in drugs used and infections analyzed. Although prophylaxis was advocated in 22 studies the timing and duration of antimicrobials were not necessarily determinants of effective prophylaxis. Controversy regarding antimicrobial prophylaxis in urology is associated with inconsistencies in experimental methodology, which have persisted despite 3 decades of investigation. © 1978 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByViitanen J, Talja M, Jussila E, Nurmi M, Permi J, Puolakka V, Rintala E, Salmela H, Tiitinen J, Tuhkanen K and Elo J (2018) Randomized Controlled Study of Chemoprophylaxis in Transurethral ProstatectomyJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 5 Part 2, (1715-1717), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1993.Gorelick J, Senterfit L and Vaughan E (2018) Quantitative Bacterial Tissue Cultures From 209 Prostatectomy Specimens: Findings and ImplicationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 1, (57-60), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1988.Desai K, Abrams P and White L (2018) A Double-blind Comparative Trial of Short-term Orally Administered Enoxacin in the Prevention of Urinary Infection after Elective Transurethral Prostatectomy: A Clinical and Pharmacokinetic StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 6, (1232-1234), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1988.Grabe M (2018) Antimicrobial Agents in Transurethral Prostatic ResectionJournal of Urology, VOL. 138, NO. 2, (245-252), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1987.Prokocimer P, Quazza M, Gibert C, Lemoine J, Joly M, Dureuil B, Moulonguet A, Manuel C and Desmonts J (2018) Short-Term Prophylactic Antibiotics in Patients Undergoing Prostatectomy: Report of a Double-Blind Randomized Trial with 2 Intravenous Doses of CefotaximeJournal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 1, (60-64), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1986.Falkiner F, Ma P, Murphy D, Cafferkey M and Gillespie W (2018) Antimicrobial Agents for the Prevention of Urinary Tract Infection in Transurethral SurgeryJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 4, (766-768), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1983.Fair W (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 4, (768-768), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1983.
