SUMMARY Measuring impact forces between an animal's foot and the ground can be done with a specific device which has broad application. The measuring device is based on the concept of preload which is discussed in detail and allows use of sensitive instruments in a severe environment. The device was built and tested successfully while attached to a horse's hoof.
