Self-supported cauliflower-like S-doped Ni microspheres grown on a Cu wire (NiS<sub>x</sub>/CW) are fabricated <italic>via</italic> a facile, one-step electrodeposition approach in ethaline, which exhibit highly active and durable HER catalytic activity in alkaline solution.
