Abstract

This paper argues that the goal of reducing the differences between features within a 3D model and the use of 3D haptic space of the force feedback device is not necessarily desirable. We present the idea of a non-realistic haptic rendering system. We examine in detail the mapping of 3D data structures onto 3D haptic space and show the use of information layers which are based on a logical decomposition of the information space to be presented, rather than a purely geometric decomposition of an underlying geomertic model. As an example for the different techniques we use the virtual reconstruction of the palace of Otto the Great.
