1. Abstract This paper describes the efforts of an interdisciplinary research team to design a generally applicable system for ergonomic optimization with respect to the physiological properties of the human body and the body’s interaction with the product. The articulation of biological principles in the form of optimization criteria, their implementation into efficient methods for musculoskeletal simulation, and the use of the methods for ergonomic optimization are described. It is concluded that musculoskeletal analysis based on optimization principles holds a large potential in basic research as well as in product development.
