This prospective study showed that fibrinolytic markers such as PAI-1, tPA, tPA/PAI-1 complex are independently associated with the development of hypertension. This supports the hypothesis that disturbances in fibrinolysis precede a cardiovascular event. Therefore, hypertension may be associated with impaired fibrinolysis.
