Summary Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry ( MALDI ‐ TOF MS ) was used for the discrimination among wood decay fungal species of the genera Fomitopsis , Rhodofomes , Fomes and Ganoderma (Polyporaceae, Basidiomycota). For all taxa studied, distance levels as high as 400 were observed and intraspecies variability and reproducibility accounted for distance levels up to 150, indicating the applicability of this method for the identification of filamentous basidiomycete fungi. The method was found to work on in vitro mycelia.
