The claiming of the nation by tile new middle class and the series of exclusions (of dalits, of Muslims) it produces as natural feeds into the agenda of Hindutva. The portrayal of 'mainstream' and non-exceptional characters in commercial cinema provides one point of access to this complex configuration.
