Abstract

Marine Tertiary rocks in Australia are confined chiefly to narrow strips along the western and southern coasts of the mainland and the north coast of Tasmania. Differences in sedimentation and foraminiferal assemblages suggest that they were laid down in two major sedimentary provinces here designated the Austral-Indo-Pacific province and the Bass Strait province. The foraminiferal assemblages in each province are discussed and correlations with other areas in the Indo-Pacific region and New Zealand are suggested.
