Abstract It is shown that a logarithmic regression equation is not the best expression of the relationship between untransformed data on length and weight. Application of the Newton-Raphson solution improves the fit, as shown by higher coefficients of determination. Using this method, single length/weight equations have been derived for the following species: Aglantha digitale, Tomopteris helgolandica and T. planctonis, Thysanoessa inermis (applicable also to other Thysanoessa species), Sergestes arcticus, Pasiphaea multidentata, Sagitta elegans, Eukrohnia hamata, and mature and immature E. bathypelagica.
