It is a pleasure to welcome the third edition of this book which has deservedly earned a reputation as one of the best organized and informative text books in the basic medical sciences. In comparison with the previous edition of 10 years ago, the most notable change is that the book is now written by 42 different contributors. One is thus reminded of the remarkable achievement represented by previous editions which were the product of only two authors. Fortunately, the new third edition has not succumbed to the usual perils of multiple authorship; the original format and style have been maintained, and the result appears to be an actual improvement over the last edition, if such is possible.Although total pages have increased by only 25–30, this edition probably contains even more material than the old edition because the size of type in the sections in small print has been reduced to a rather extreme degree.
