Crystal Structures: A Working Approach

Abstract

This is not yet another account of crystal structure determination, but is a compendium of the results of such determinations 'as a starting point for useful predictions about materials and for advances towards a deeper understanding of properties of matter'. Crystallographic concepts and language are explained for the reader, assuming only a general background in the physical sciences, and successive chapters on interatomic forces, symmetry and space groups, families of structures, temperature effects and phase transitions are illustrated with numerous detailed examples.
