Abstract

Economic inequality in the UK stands at historically high levels and there is emerging evidence that a high level of inequality may cause socio-economic problems. However, little is known about public attitudes on this issue.     The study:   - starts by examining public attitudes to inequality and poverty;   - considers public attitudes to redistribution;   - highlights apparent contradictions in public attitudes;   - explores the more underlying values people draw on when forming their opinions on these issues;   - reviews key findings, and discusses policy implications and research gaps
