We present here a formula for expressing the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism of an elliptic curve <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> E E </inline-formula> over <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> F q \mathbb {F}_q </inline-formula> satisfying <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> j ( E ) ≠ 0 , 1728 j(E)\neq 0, 1728 </inline-formula> and <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> q ≡ 1 ( mod 12 ) q\equiv 1 \pmod {12} </inline-formula> in terms of special values of Gaussian hypergeometric series.
