Abstract

This paper, an edited version of the address to the Board of Gwernors of the World Bank in September I 999, argues that the challenge of development is one whi,h demands ti joint effort; coalitions across a wide .rpectrmn which will make the difference in their collective effort to reduce the ,;/arming mnnben of people in pwert). Th01e that need to come together ind1tde the tr,iditional multilateral institutions like the World Bank Gro11p, the United Nations Jystem and the International Monetary F11nd. Their mllective effort in t11rn must include governments in the ind11striatized world and the developing world; it must include the private sector and, must importantly, it must include civil society in ,ill its incarnations. For peace and stability to be achieved in the world, the global community hm to lift its sights to bring about an equitable development that includes all the citizens of the world.
