Combined experiment and DFT research on the formation of the Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> layer in AFA stainless steel is presented. The oxide layer has the multilayer structure with outer Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and inner Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> due to the diffusion of Al from the matrix to the Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> slab.
