Abstract

More than 60% of the world population live in Asia, with
\nsubstantial numbers in very deprived socioeconomic conditions.
\nThe heterogeneity between the countries of the region is
\nreflected in their health systems, which vary from well
\ndeveloped to virtually absent. Providing access to care, in
\nparticular for those at greatest need, is a regional priority that
\ncomes on top the more general global challenge of transforming
\nhealth systems to respond better to the needs of ageing
\npopulations with chronic health problems and increasing health
\ncosts.
