Abstract

This monograph shows that no cultivation of bamboo has been undertaken in East Africa. Indiscrimate cutting is going on in the other East African countries. Very little is known of the biology, potential for cultivation. In conclusion therefore, it is now clear that goods and services from bamboo resource will not be sustained unless several technical problems are addressed. The role of A. alpina in supplying water to rural people in Tanzania (Lipangile 1987) serves as a good example of socio-economic role of bamboo to rural development.
