Similar “Two Degree of Freedom Proportional-Integral-Derivative” (2DOF-PID) Controllers have been used in two areas of interconnected thermal power system for Automatic Generation Control. The meta-heuristic approach called as “Grey Wolf Optimization” and local search method known as “Pattern Search” have been combined to optimize the parameters of 2DOF-PID controllers for the application in two area thermal power plant. The proposed technique is named as hGWO-PS. The Integral of Time Multiplied by Absolute Error (ITAE) is used as an objective function for the standard interconnected thermal system under investigation. The performance of the 2DOF-PID controller optimized by proposed “hGWO-PS” technique has also been compared with fuzzy Proportional-Integral controller optimized by hPSO-PS technique, recently available in the literature. The results show that the hGWO-PS optimized 2DOF-PID controller for AGC significantly low the value of ITAE (0.112) as compared to the controller optimized by other approaches in the literature. The simulation results also reveal that “hGWO-PS” optimized 2DOF-PID controller for AGC provides far better performance than recently published approaches in the literature in terms of better dynamic response, less settling times/overshoots along with the fewer oscillations.
