Abstract

The Épinal-Erfurt Glossary (EE) is a Latin-Old English glossary written in England in the late seventh century. Its oldest witness, the Épinal manuscript, is dated to ca. 700. Although there have been a number of partial editions and several facsimile editions, the entire glossary has never been published. This article presents an essay containing the history of the scholarship, a full investigation of the glossary’s sources along with the method used to construct the glossary, and the principles used to edit the sample presented here. The essay is followed by the sample edition with translation, and a detailed commentary on each entry. It is the hope of the authors that this sample will serve as a basis for a full edition of this invaluable lexical resource.
