As the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system is the main part of the Flywheel Energy Storage (FES) system which has great influence on the loss of FES system, it is important to improve the efficiency of the PMSM system. This paper presents an analytical nonlinear loss model of the PMSM system which can calculates the PMSM loss and power converter loss together by the torque and speed. The PMSM loss predicted by the analytical model can take the copper loss and iron loss into account in magnetic circuit. The nonlinear characteristics of the switching loss and conduction loss in the power converter can be also considered in the nonlinear model. Based on the system loss model, the maximum efficiency control is proposed to make the system maintain maximum efficiency in the whole range of operating conditions for the FES system. The maximum efficiency control can optimize the copper loss, iron loss and power converter loss together. By the use of the SiC MOSFETs, the PMSM system can decrease the switching loss of power devices significantly and increase the efficiency of system. Both numerical analysis and experiments show that the maximum efficiency control can improve the performance of the PMSM system and approach a remarkably efficiency of the FES system.
