Prof. Thompson has written a book in which the ideas and material are presented at two quite distinct levels of scientific sophistication. In the first quarter of the book he discusses the nature of point and extended defects in crystals at an extremely elementary level; thus the discussion is mainly restricted to defect models based on the linear, isotropic elastic continuum.
