Abstract

In this paper, an attempt has been made to present the magnitude and trends of the road safety problem and the prevailing accident characteristics in Bangladesh. This paper also reviews some major road safety initiatives undertaken by different governmental and nongovernmental actors in recent years to control and reduce road traffic accidents and injuries and their effectiveness. Finally, the paper identifies the road safety improvement constraints in Bangladesh and future requirements for developing research-based scientific, pragmatic and costeffective countermeasures to improve the situation.
