Differential equations describing the behaviour of very general mixtures are derived by Prof Burgers from the starting point of the Maxwell–Boltzmann equation which governs the individual particle velocity distribution functions. The moment method is employed throughout, so that it is necessary at some stage to truncate the scheme by representing higher moments as suitably chosen functions of lower moments, and there is not much discussion of the limitations of this approach.
