Abstract

This monograph contains five chapters, the first on the ideas of stress and strain, the second on the elastic and nonelastic behaviour of metals, rocks and other actual materials, the third on the equations of motion and equilibrium for various types of material, and the fourth and fifth on applications. There are many books on elastic theory and properties of matter, but this one is distinguished by its unified treatment of the elastic and nonelastic behaviour of materials that are of special concern to the geologist and geophysicist, and the final chapter is wholly devoted to structural geology.
