Abstract

To keep plasmapheresis membranes unclogged, shear flow of blood over them is necessary, but the role of shear has not been established. A simple convection mechanism, applicable only to finite-sized particles, is described and shown to correlate available plasmapheresis data better than the “lift” and “concentration polarization” models previously proposed.
