Abstract

When industry runs into difficult economic periods, it has so often happened in the past that R and D departments have suffered cutbacks, or even closures. If R and D work is very speculative, and not closely linked with commercial requirements, it is only too easy to prune R and D activities without any serious and significant reduction in company sales or profits.
