Induction motors are the most widely used electrical motors due to their reliability, low cost and robustness. However, induction motors do not inherently have the capability of variable speed operation. Due to this reason, earlier dc motors were applied in most of the electrical drives. But the recent developments in speed control methods of the induction motor have led to their large scale use in almost all electrical drives. The vector control analysis of an induction motor allows the decoupled analysis where the torque and the flux components are independently controlled. The Paper presents a comparison of program based IM model and modular simulation of IM using IFOC. The results are then compared to the IM model with sliding Mode control (SMC) is presented. The SMC proposed is insensitive to uncertainties, hence used to control the speed of an induction motor drive. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is a robust control scheme based on the concept of changing the structure of the controller in response to the changing state of the system in order to obtain a desired response.
