Effect of Preswelling on Durable-Press Performance of Cotton

Abstract

Treatment of cotton twill with liquid ammonia, followed by aqueous rinsing and drying left the fabric supple and soft. Pretreatment of cotton twill with liquid ammonia prior to cross-linking for durable press improved wash-wear rating and abrasion resistance. At the same time, it improved significantly the hand and reduced initial modulus of extension with improvement of resiliency.
