This paper briefly reviews various geometry-driven methods for analysing the solidification process of a casting, which offer the advantage of being faster and less dependent on material properties than numerical methods. A new method for identifying hot spots and simulating feeding paths in three- dimensional models of castings has been introduced. This is based on determining the direction of the largest thermal gradient at any point inside the casting. The method can account for the effects of cores, gating, pouring parameters and feeding aids such as chill, insulating and exothermic materials. It has been validated by modelling a variety of castings from industry.
