Prevalence of bacterial infections in patients in an intensive care unit

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of bacterial infections and the most frequent causative agents in ICUs of three hospitals in Porto Alegre, RS; in addition to analyzing the resistance profile of the identified bacteria in relation to the main antibiotics. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from work maps in the period from January to April 2013. Results: A total of 98 samples were positive for bactria. Of these Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were the most frequently reported, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae, coagulase negative Staphylococcus and Acinetobacter baumannii. Conclusion: We found a varied prevalence of microrganisms according with the infectious site.
