The results of the present study suggest that ionic contaminants, if present not only in the insulation but also on the surface of outer and inner semiconductive layers, accelerate the generation and growth of water trees. In cable production, therefore, care should be exercised so as to choose cable insulation and semiconductor materials that contain as little low S 0 ions (e.g., OH − , SO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf> 2− , Na + , Ca 2+ , etc.) as possible.
