A novel dual band-notched printed monopole antenna (BPMA) for ultra-wideband (UWB) application is presented. The purpose of this antenna is used to prevent interference problems due to the existing nearby communication systems within an UWB operating frequency. The band-notches are realized by adding an independent controllable strip as well as using a hook-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) in the ground plane, and band rejected filtering properties in the WiMAX/WLAN are achieved. Simulated results show that the designed antenna, with a compact size of 24 × 26 × 1 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> , has an impedance bandwidth of 2.9-14 GHz for VSWR less than 2, except two frequency stop-bands of 3.4-4.2 GHz and 5.2-5.9 GHz. Besides, the antenna has good omnidirectional radiation patterns in the H plane. moreover, parametric studies are discussed in detail.
