Abstract

If coal is to continue as a major fuel source for power production, a new generation of clean and efficient coal gasification plants must be developed. The paper addresses the development of a rigorous dynamic simulation model and control scheme for an air blown gasification cycle prototype integrated plant (PIP). In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PIP control scheme, a number of simulation case studies were conducted. The control scheme was shown to be capable of controlling the complete plant in the event of a full-load rejection, which represents the most severe fault condition likely to be encountered. A smooth controlled load acceptance and load reduction were also demonstrated with the demanded power being followed accurately in both cases. The development of the PIP dynamic model and simulation has produced a very powerful design tool which can be utilised in the development of control schemes, both for individual plant components (for example the gasifier) and for the global plant control philosophy (M.S. Donne et al., 1998).
